Australian swimming legend Grant Hackett has revealed Kyle Chalmers, Emma McKeon and Cody Simpson have sat down together over the storm that has swirled around them at the Commonwealth Games.

On the same morning Simpson moved through to the semi-finals of the men’s 100m butterfly, Hackett said the three athletes want the rumours put to bed once and for all.

The trio have been engulfed in speculation surrounding their private lives.

All three have said there is no friction between them at all.

McKeon dated Chalmers last year. She is now in a relationship with Simpson.

Chalmers said the speculation was “actually just cr**”. He also revealed his mum has been in tears this week as a result of the swirling rumours and said he is at breaking point as he continues to deal with mental health issues.

Chalmers also pulled out of the men’s 100m butterfly on Monday night, an event where Simpson and national champion Matt Temple moved through to the semi-finals, in order to focus on his pet event — the 100m freestyle. Chalmers set a new Commonwealth Games record in the semi-finals yesterday and enters the event as the man to beat.

McKeon, who yesterday broke the record for the most gold medals ever won at the Commonwealth Games, is also the fastest qualifier for the 50m butterfly final.

It would be an incredible effort for the pair to deliver another gold medal for Australia in the middle of the storm.

Hackett, who has been one of Simpson’s top mentors in his swimming comeback, revealed the media frenzy has had an impact on the three swimmers, who all want to move on from it as soon as possible.

“They’re professionals, they’re teammates, they get along with each other, they respect each other where they need to, and they go out there and they execute performances for the country and they support one another,” he said on Nine’s Today Show.

“You’ve already got the pressure of performance from the whole country – there’s a huge amount of expectation when it comes to the Australian swim team, particularly when it comes to the Commonwealth Games.

“We always have that first week, and we always dominate usually, but that does come with a lot of pressure in terms of that performance.

“So this continually gets out there really distracts from some of the great performances.

“This was a story that was back at the Commonwealth Games trials a couple of months ago, and the three of them put it to bed.

“Kyle’s come out very openly and said, this is a bunch of rubbish.

“No one had any problems. They couldn’t believe the fuss around it.”
