The lyrics to You’re the Voice, so you don’t end up looking embarrassed like Malcolm Turnbull
MALCOM Turnbull was slammed for not knowing the words to our unofficial national anthem. Do you share his secret shame?
FOR days now, actually years to be honest, Tony Abbott has been urging the PM to fall on his sword.
Is Australia listening? Nope.
But last night, on the Gold Coast, Australia was listening good and proper. We collectively wailed as Malcolm Turnbull did the most sackable of offences for any true blue, dyed-in-the-wool Aussie.
He didn’t know the words to John Farnham’s You’re the Voice .
Thirty Newspolls in a row? Pffft. Mangling that patriotic power ballad cum protest anthem?
It’s fair to say the PM has only cemented his silvertailed reputation of being slightly out of touch with everyone outside the Point Piper neighbourhood.
Farnham’s absolute belter was written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson and topped the charts in Australia, Germany — and Sweden no less.
But while we all think we can remember famous ditties at the drop of the hat, turns out lots of other Australians also didn’t know the lyrics.
The hosts of Melbourne’s 3AW breakfast show, Ross Stevenson and John Burns, attempted to burst into Farnham’s famous song. It didn’t go well.
“It’s time to look at each other through the barrel of a gun,” was one suggestion for the opening line.
Guess again.
“You’re the Voice?” No.
“It’s time?”
Even when the duo was given the first five words of the first line, “we have the chance to ...” they still couldn’t complete the sentence.
Malcolm Turnbull is today being judged for not knowing the lyrics to 'You're The Voice'.

Given some Australians struggle with the entire first verse of the national anthem, let alone the second verse (hint, it starts “Beneath our radiant Southern Cross”) should we be the first to judge Mal over his lack of knowledge of an Aussie classic?
To avoid embarrassment at major sporting events in future, here are the lyrics to You’re the Voice in full.
Save them, print them out and keep them handy.
(If you forget any words, just say wo wo wo — there’s so many of them, it may just suffice.)
You’re the Voice lyrics
We have the chance to turn the pages over
We can write what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet, before we get much older
We’re all someone’s daughter
We’re all someone’s son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
This time, we know we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing we can make it better
Ooh, we’re all someone’s daughter
We’re all someone’s son, oh
Give a look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
Ooh, we’re all someone’s daughter
We’re all someone’s son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
You’re the voice, try and understand it
Make the noise and make it clear, oh, woah
We’re not gonna sit in silence
We’re not gonna live with fear, oh, woah
