The spectacle was headlined by the presence of a giant 10m tall “Raging Bull” as a performance by local hero Lenny Henry had plenty of people talking.

The British actor’s lighthearted jokes during the opening ceremony were a major talking point, but it was the Aussie athletes who almost caused a traffic jam mid-ceremony.

As the athletes made their entrance into the stadium and down the 100m straight, a third of the team stopped mid-track to get their selfie fix.

The stoppage saw Oceania teams Niue, Tuvalu, Fiji and Tonga caught up in the delay, but thankfully no major chaos ensued.

Before the ceremony even commenced, Prince Charles left the Aussie squad speechless with a startling admission.

The Prince of Wales let slip to the Australian athletes “you are the team that the others are terrified of” at these Games.

Australian swimming team manager Mel Tantrum was quick to reply: “We are actually very friendly”.

His comments came in the hours prior to the opening ceremony where he made a grand entrance into the stadium in his own $1 million Aston Martin. The car, a 1969 Aston Martin DV 6 Series II Volante was given to him on his 21st birthday by the Queen.

Charles then found himself the hottest commodity inside the stadium as athletes rushed to get snaps alongside the Prince.

The biggest hit of the night came with musical icons Duran Duran, whose career started in Birmingham.

Everyone inside the stadium was loving it, dancing along to the music as the famous British band produced a festival atmosphere with some classic tunes.

TV viewers went wild too, taking to social media to praise the veterans for ending things on a high note as they belted out fan favourites Save A Prayer, Planet Earth and Ordinary World.
