EXPLAINER: Olympic cycling success no guarantee after Games dominance

AUSTRALIA is staring at double gold in the road time trial on day six of the Games with three world-class cyclists expected to ride a wave of home crowd support to the podium.

World championship medallist Katrin Garfoot is the raging favourite in the women’s race while Cameron Meyer and Callum Scotson’s main competition may come from each other in the race against the clock at Currumbin.

Meyer will attempt to emulate teammate Matthew Glaetzer’s efforts in rebounding from disappointment to strike gold on the track after he missed the medals in the points race, of which he is the reigning world champion, on Sunday night.

The men will race over 38.5km and the women 25.5km with the start and finish on the Currumbin beachfront.

“I haven’t spoken to Cam since but it was clear from the position he finished that it probably wasn’t what he expected, he’s definitely going well so I think he’ll come out and do a good one,” Scotson said.

“He should pull up well, he’s got a lot of experience and age behind him.”

Scotson won an Olympic silver medal on the track in Rio but has opted to ride the road on the Gold Coast and said he had been inspired by his teammates’ 10 gold on the velodrome.

“It’s been incredible and I’ve been behind the scenes a bit during the season seeing the work they’ve done and I was blown away seeing the times they did,” he said.

Garfoot meanwhile decided to step away from professional cycling in Europe this year to focus on the Commonwealth Games, family and her future off the bike but she hasn’t decided if this will be her swan song.

“I can’t say for sure, I decided not to think about it until after the race because I wanted to focus on what I’m doing,” Garfoot said.

“I’m flexible, I will go on holiday and think about what I want to do. It could be that I go on to Tokyo but I’m not sure.

“There’s a bit more to it than just medals. I’m old, I need money, I need superannuation so that plays a bit more of a role. Real life is catching up with me.”
