EMMA Adams was the youngest member of Australia’s shooting squad at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games four years ago.
Now the 19-year-old’s best friend, Tori Rossiter, has that title ahead of this week’s event on the Gold Coast and Adams cannot wait for them to wear the green and gold together.
Adams will shoot in the 50m rifle three positions and 10m air rifle, while Rossiter, 16, will line up in the latter competition.
“We vicariously live through each other so when she does really well, of course, I’m really proud of her,” Adams, of Woodcroft, says.
“If I do well, she’s just as proud of me.
“It’s less of a competition and more just support on the line.
“She’s doing incredibly well at the moment and it should be a good Games for both of us I think.”
Adams finished 14th in the 10m air rifle in Glasgow.
The experience was eye-opening, not simply because the eyes of the nation were on the Games but the crowds were more boisterous than she had experienced.
“The commentator said ‘if you see a good shot, cheer’ and they definitely did.
“It used to be a lot like tennis where everyone would sit there quietly watching you.
“It’s good preparation for hopefully the home support we’re going to have here.”
Adams is also more prepared for the long spells of down time, which is something that surprised her in Glasgow.
She will compete in her first event on Monday and the other on Friday.
The Bachelor of Education/Languages student is bringing fiction books to read, plans to draw with water colours, watch Netflix and spend plenty of time with Rossiter.
“She’ll probably get sick of me,” Adams jokes.
Adams says she has become more confident and professional over the past four years.
Making a final is her aim next week.
“I went to Glasgow partially for experience but mainly to get me ready for future events.
“It definitely has.
“I’ll just do my best on the day like I always try to do and if it gets me a medal, I’ll be ecstatic and if it doesn’t, I’ll still be happy.”
