Daniel Repacholi claims gold in men’s 50m air pistol, Emma Cox wins silver in women’s double trap

BEARDED and burly shooter Daniel Repacholi has earned shooting redemption after winning the men’s 50m air pistol, his third Commonwealth Games gold medal.

HIS wife and two young daughters were in the crowd to cheer him on and that didn’t stop Australian shooter big Daniel Repacholi from unloading both on and off the range after winning his third Commonwealth Games gold medal.

“Oh it’s f***ing awesome,” he said after taking out the men’s 50m air pistol at Belmont.

“I came here for two (gold) but I got one so I can walk away with that and hold my head high.”

The bearded and burly 35-year-old scored 227.2 to win from Bangladesh’s Shakil Ahmed and Indian Om Mitharval and it came just days after he was disappointed to finish fourth in the 10m air pistol.

But just as cyclists Matthew Glaetzer on the velodrome and Cameron Meyer on the road, and swimmer Emily Seebohm in the pool discovered, Repacholi found the perfect tonic for disappointment at these Games was a gold medal.

“A lot of redemption after missing out (in that event), but we did well with my teammate Kerry Bell winning silver so it was great and now we have a gold in this one,” he said.

“I was confident, I am always confident going into the finals. The other day it didn’t work for me, it just wasn’t my time but this one worked out.

“It wasn’t so much about nerves, I just had a job to do and I knew what I had to do to do it.”

Watched by his excited wife and daughters Zoe and Asha, Repacholi said he didn’t know how much longer his career would continue after also winning gold in Melbourne in 2006 and Glasgow in 2014.

“I know I’ve got plenty of good shooting left in me but I need to spend some time with the family. Family is more important right now so we’ll see how we go,” he said.

In other finals on Wednesday, Emma Cox had one hand on the gold medal in the women’s double trap but let it slip to Indian Shreyasi Singh in a shoot-off.

Cox led by seven after three rounds but posted 18 to Singh’s 25 in the last round and then went one for two in response to Singh’s pair in the shoot-off to claim the silver medal.

The 25-year-old started clay target shooting when drought killed off the ducks on her family’s farm in country Victoria in the mid-2000s and Wednesday’s silver medal was the first of her career after she finished sixth in Glasgow.

Cox said she was thrilled to medal after her preparation for the Games was spent with one foot in a moon boot after she was accidentally run over by an off-road buggy late last year and had battled pneumonia.

“I had a hard run up to this event, I had a bit of pneumonia, so was getting over that throughout the selections,” Cox said.

“I also had a bit of an accident (foot injury) and ended up in a moon boot for a few months.

“So all of those together it didn’t look very likely that I’d win a medal but I’m here today and I think I’ve done my country proud.”
