Commonwealth Games 2018: Michelle Jenneke finishes fourth in the 100m hurdles final

NO Sally Pearson but Michelle Jenneke has delivered a brave effort to finish fourth in the 100m hurdles. Meanwhile, Bendigo bowler Aaron Wilson kickstarted a party and continued a team tradition by tearing his shirt off after winning gold.

IT was supposed to be Sally Pearson’s golden evening but in her absence Nigeria took the title and Michelle Jenneke impressed.

Jenneke improved on her fifth place in Glasgow four years ago by finishing fourth in the 100m hurdles final. But it looked like a medal was heading the dancing hurdler’s way for much of the event after Jenneke got an amazing start in lane one. She was still in front at halfway before Nigeria’s Oluwatobiloba Amusan started motoring and she streeted away to win the gold medal in 12.68sec. Jamaica filled the minor medals with Danielle Williams second in 12.78sec and Yanique Thompson third (12.97sec). Jenneke, who ran 12.99sec in the heat, clocked 13.07sec. Perth’s Brianna Beahan, who has been mentoree by Pearson over the past couple of weeks, finished fifth in 13.11sec. “I am glad that the Australians got to see that,” says Tamsyn Lewis. “She is a great, talented athlete. She got to show people she is not just about a dance, she can hurdle and compete well.” Pearson, the winner of the previous two Commonwealth titles, was forced to withdraw last week because of an Achilles injury.
