Commonwealth Games 2018: Yamba cousins Donna Urquhart and Cameron Pilley strike gold
YAMBA cousins Donna Urquhart and Cameron Pilley won a tough battle for mixed doubles gold by being better in the big points than India’s Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal.
YAMBA cousins Donna Urquhart and Cameron Pilley have won a squash gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after defeating Indian pair Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal in the mixed doubles final.
Neither side had more than a three-point lead throughout the entire contest, however Australia were strong at the pointy end of both sets and eventually won 11-8 11-10.
Tensions rose in a closely-fought second set, where the host nation was the beneficiary of a number of contentious refereeing decisions.
Earlier two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Palmer and Zac Alexander reached the final of the men’s squash doubles after beating a Scottish duo.
The Australians needed just 30 minutes to beat Alan Clyne and Greg Lobban 11-8 11-5 and book a gold medal match against England’s Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller on Sunday.
After coming out of retirement for the second time to compete on the Gold Coast, the 41-year-old Palmer confirmed this would be his final Games appearance.
“This is it. I think my wife would kill me if I signed up for another one. I wanted one more taste of it and I can’t wait for tomorrow,” he said.
“My goal was to win a medal and to try to help Zac win his first one, and now that we’re guaranteed one it’s is a good feeling. But we don’t want to sit back on that, we want to get the gold now.”
The news wasn’t as good in the women’s doubles, with Rachael Grinham and Donna Urquhart going down to New Zealand twosome Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy 11-9 11-5 in the semi-final.
