Tickets to the beach volleyball, one of the most popular events at the Games, cost up to $100 each.

But lucky tourists and locals in high-rises along the Coolangatta beachfront are getting a free birds-eye view of the action down on the court.

The happy accidental spectators include the Patterson family, from Brisbane.

Lenny and Suzanne Patterson and their sons Levi, 10, and Cooper, 7, are having their traditional Easter holiday at the Beach House resort at Coolangatta and are taking in some bonus beach volleyball viewing from their balcony.

“You couldn’t get a better seat,” Mr Patterson said, beer in hand and an Aussie flag flying next to him as he watched the Australian women’s team in action.

“We love holidaying down here as it is but to have the Commonwealth Games beach volleyball literally on our doorstep is amazing. The whole family’s getting right into it.”

Beach House general manager David Abood said the timeshare resort was full for the Games and balconies were bedecked with flags as guests embraced the event.

“It’s fantastic to see the vibe in Coolangatta,” he said.

“Most of the Games events are on the northern end of the Coast so to have one of the showpiece events here is great for the area.”
