WHILE the autumn weather has been starting to set in, Saturday offered the perfect reprieve for the NTC (Nike Training Camp) Tour to be held at Darling Wharf in Sydney where up to 2,500 women underwent a full day’s workout led by master trainers with appearances from some of the world’s top female athletes.
Among those there were Nike athletes Carissa Moore, stopping in on her way to Bells Beach before the second WSL tour event for 2016, and Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan, both of whom are serious about delivering a message of health and empowerment to women.
Moore was a late addition to the lineup but took part in Q&A sessions with the women who attended the event as well as participating in classes held at various stages around the Wharf area at Pyrmont.
“I was really blown away when I pulled up and saw 1,000 women or so all moving in unison together,” Moore said.
“On your own, starting a fitness program can be really overwhelming and intimidating but when you’re standing next to 100 women and you’re all moving together … You don’t have to be skinny, you don’t have to be fit to be anything, you just have to start and it’s really great that Nike does this.”
Participants paid $80 to take part in the NTC Tour, the second time it has been held in Sydney, and take part in classes including boxing, pilates, circuit, spin as well as having access to massage therapists, nail artists, hair braiding and the athlete information sessions.
Nike has strengthened its position in women’s health and fitness in recent years and the NTC Tour is one way they are hoping to inspire women to pursue fitness as a regular element of their life, and their suite of female athletes are more than happy to help deliver that message.
“This kind of Nike event is just so inspiring, having so many women together in this kind of movement, being active and healthy and people see that outside and want to join in and that inspires and motivates people,” said Olympian Anna Flanagan.
“One of the great things about it is that so many women are getting involved because of these events and if we can encourage young girls to have a healthy and active lifestyle we can cut out a lot of the obesity problems and things that we can have now.”
And her advice to people who don’t have training as part of their everyday job?
“Get someone on board with you. Go to a gym that has a class and you can build that sort of community.”
