ADELAIDE has the chance to trump Richmond in an auction for former Melbourne co-captain Jack Trengove in a come-home trade to South Australia.

While the Tigers appear deep into negotiations to trade their first-round draft pick (No.12) to Melbourne for Trengove, the Crows could create - and win - an auction for the SA-born midfielder with their No.10 call at next month’s national player lottery.

Trengove, 23, emerged on the trade table when Melbourne puts its No.2 pick in the 2009 national draft on the path to a new AFL club.

Melbourne has put 81-game Trengove and draft pick No.23 on the table for Richmond’s first-round draft pick, No.12.

But Adelaide has draft pick No.10 to trump the Tigers.

The Crows also hold the advantage of allowing Trengove - who must approve any trade - to return to SA where he emerged as a league player at SANFL club Sturt in 2009.

Adelaide re-affirmed it will always look at a South Australian on the trade market. But the Crows were not indicating an eagerness to trade their first-round draft pick - the first Adelaide has had since 2011 after being locked out of the first two rounds of the draft in 2012 and last year by the Kurt Tippett sanctions.

AFL trade talks were overshadowed by the Western Bulldogs sacking senior coach Brendan McCartney.

Port Adelaide and Essendon made no progress in sorting out ruckman-forward Paddy Ryder’s move to Alberton. The Power continues to have its first-round draft pick, No. 17, on the table to the Bombers.

This trade is expected to drag out to the final deadline on Thursday afternoon.

The Power also remained without a deal - either by swapping draft picks or with a third party - to satisfy Gold Coast for contracted ruckman Daniel Gorringe who wants to return to SA.

There was one trade completed - South Australian-born defender Joel Patful left Brisbane, where he had a year on his contract, to join Greater Western Sydney. The Suns have given up draft pick No.21 for the two-time Lions club champion.
