Tim Tszyu’s world title fight with undisputed champion Jermell Charlo finally confirmed

Australian boxing star Tim Tszyu will fight undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo for a world title later this year.

Tim Tszyu will fight undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo for a world title after the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) ordered the American to be the next opponent for Australian boxing’s biggest star.

Last month, Charlo became the seventh man since 2004 to claim four major title belts in one division after toppling Argentina’s Brian Castano in California to secure the WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF belts.

Tszyu, who is the No. 1 mandatory challenger at super-welterweight, will follow in the footsteps of his legendary father Kostya and become a world champion if he emerges victorious.

“Obviously him (Charlo) being the undisputed champion, all the cards are in their favour,” No Limit Boxing chief executive George Rose told Fox Sports News.

“Where we’re at at the moment is we’re pushing an Australian or US location. We’d love it in Australia, obviously they want the US location and if it is in the US we’d be pushing for LA or Las Vegas. I think the likely timing of it would be October-November.”

No Limit Boxing and TGB Promotions have until June 20 to set a date, documents on the WBO website confirmed.

“The WBO World Championship Committee hereby orders the parties herein the commencement of negotiations for the above-mentioned WBO Jr. Middleweight Mandatory Championship Contest,” wrote Luis Batista-Salas, chairman of the WBO Championship Committee.

“Please be advised that the parties have twenty (20) days upon receipt of this letter to reach an agreement.

“If an accord is not reached within the time frame set forth herein, a Purse Bid will be ordered pursuant to the WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests.

“The minimum acceptable bid for the WBO Jr. Middleweight Division is $200,000.00 (Two-Hundred Thousand Dollars). Any of the parties involved may request a purse bid procedure at any time during the negotiation process. Please do not hesitate to contact the WBO if you have any questions or concerns.”

Tszyu boasts an unbeaten professional record of 21-0 (15KO), with his most recent triumph being a unanimous decision win over America’s Terrell Gausha in March.

The 27-year-old Australian is also rated No. 2 in the WBC and No. 3 in the IBF.

Twenty-one years ago, Kostya Tszyu unified the light-welterweight division against trash-talking American Zab Judah with a second-round knockout win.

“This is my Zab Judah fight,” eldest son Tim proclaimed on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Australia’s George Kambosos has an opportunity to become the eighth undisputed world champion in Sunday’s lightweight showdown against American Devin Haney at Marvel Stadium.
