Paul Gallen flips the bird at Justis Huni at Magic Round face off

Justis Huni will be hoping to surprise Paul Gallen when he’s in his element as the former NRL star was in his element on the footy field.

Justis Huni and Paul Gallen have come face-to-face at rugby league’s Magic Round with the former NRL star flipping off his young future opponent.

Huni, the Australian heavyweight champion and a Queenslander, was picked up by the Fox Sports cameras, signalling a thumbs down before the camera panned out to reveal he was right behind Gallen.

The pair have been firing barbs ahead of the June 16 fight at the ICC Exhibition Centre in Sydney.

The 22-year-old was by himself up against the fence, seemingly looking for Gallen.

But the 39-year-old, who is undefeated in his boxing career with 11 wins and a draw against Barry Hall, including a first round KO of Lucas Browne in his last fight, went further than a simple thumbs down, flipping the bird at a smiling Huni.

The crowd loved the theatre, booing the man who led NSW for so many years before he fights the state’s up-and-coming boxing star.

“That’s Justis Huni and Paul Gallen,” Dan Ginnane said in commentary during the Souths-Sharks game.

“Paul Gallen not showing much respect. They’re not booing Huni.

“That’s WWE stuff. You’ve got Huni just prowling … there’s 50,000 seats here and he’s sat directly behind Gallen.”

Braith Anasta added sarcastically “what a coincidence”.

For Huni, who is set to chase Australia’s first boxing gold at the Tokyo Olympics, he is treating the Gallen fight as just another fight on his way to his ultimate goal, with a fight against Christian Tsoye three weeks before the Gallen bout.

But for the former NRL star, it’s set to be his biggest payday as he is set to get a lions share of an 85-15 split for the fight, believed to come in at around $1.5m.

Huni’s promoter Dean Lonergan added that Gallen was getting “the best deal of his life”.

“He’s negotiated hard. The problem with Gallen is that not only does he want his slice of the pie and your slice, he also wants his neighbour’s slice of the pie, Justis Huni’s slice and any pie that’s in the street,” Lonergan said.

It comes after Gallen demanded Lonergan “sharpen your pencil” during negotiations.

Huni’s dad and trainer Rocki has already said he believed it would be a fifth round stoppage.

“I honestly don’t see it going past the fifth round,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I think he will get to the stage where he will get stopped or he’s just taken too much punishment and the referee will turn around and say ‘stop it’ on him.

“In saying that, Gallen is an athlete, I give him props for that. He is a legend in his sport, but this is boxing, not football.”

Gallen also has a reported rematch option in his favour after the bout.
