‘Insanity’: Freak ‘double KO’ rocks MMA as chaos erupts

A bonkers video is going viral after a wild moment that was straight from the script of a Rocky Balboa film.

For more than one moment, fans thought they were watching a Rocky III freeze frame ending at the Professional Fighters League event on Friday (AEST).

Controversy erupted early in the heavyweight showdown between Tim Johnson and Danilo Marques and highlights of their dramatic bout have been spreading across syberspace.

Both fighters needed to win by stoppage to keep their play-off hopes alive — and it showed in the reckless way they came out swinging.

Their fight at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut suddenly exploded when Johnson landed a brutal left hand hook that dropped Marques to the floor.

However, that power strike landed at the exact same time Marques kicked Johnson in the privates.

Both fighters dropped like a bag of spuds in a scene straight out of Rocky Balboa’s final fight with Apollo Creed.

Chaos ensued as a dazed Marques tried to get back to his feet on wonky legs while Johnson couldn’t move from the pain of the kick that landed flush on where his box was supposed to be protecting his genitals.

Replays of the kick to Johnson’s errr johnson left the ESPN fight commentators wincing in their seats.

Johnson was unable to get back to his feet for several minutes and there was a break of almost 10 minutes before the referee continued the fight.

Fight commentators said Marques should have lost a point because of the foul, but the fight resumed with no penalty being communicated.

With Johnson barely able to function as he prepared for the fight to be resumed, even the referee said it was a “s*** sandwich”.

One ESPN commentator said: “This is one of the craziest things I’ve seen in MMA.

“He’s lying on the ground in agony right now. He has no idea how hurt his opponent is.”

Another commentator said: “I’ve seen a lot of cup checks. That might be the worst one I’ve seen honestly. That was a direct shock.”

The TV broadcasters said it was “insanity” that Johnson could have potentially lost the opportunity to keep his playoffs dream alive because of the low blow.

The drama went up another notch when the fight resumed with Johnson again dropping Marques before finishing him off with hammer fists on the ground for a TKO win at the 3:14 mark of the opening round.

It was a special day for Johnson, who was only called up to fight at short notice as a free agent late replacement.
