‘World class’: Nikita Tszyu stuns with ‘brutal’ demolition job

Nikita Tszyu took another step out of his brother’s shadow with a brutal demolition job that couldn’t have been more impressive.

Look out world, Nikita Tszyu means business.

The 24-year-old showcased his undeniable talent with a brutal demolition victory via TKO over Mason Smith in Newcastle on Wednesday night.

Smith came out swinging hard in the first round and Tszyu had no choice but to return fire with a barrage of blows that had his challenger quickly seeing stars.

Tszyu dropped Smith early with a left-right combination and proceeded to bash him and leave him with a bloody nose, before the fight was called off inside the first round.

“He’s just destroyed another opponent,” commentator Ben Damon said on Main Event.

“He has shown all the skills, but first and foremost he has shown world class power. That was brutal.”

It was a supreme performance by Tszyu, who is now 2-0 (both knockouts) and rapidly stepping out of the shadow of his older brother Tim.

Nikita now looms as a contender for the super-welterweight division, in which Tim is striving for the world title.

“It’s the blood that gets me,” Tszyu said in the ring after his victory.

“I love seeing the blood. That bloody nose. The joy I felt from that.”

He modestly rated his performance a 6.5 out of 10.

“I just want to keep on improving,” he said.

“I wore a couple shots that I shouldn’t have (taken). There were still a few mistakes I made. “But I’m proud of where I am, but it’s still baby steps.”

His older brother Tim disagreed: “He just knocked this guy out. 10! Wait til he starts knocking everyone out now.”

Only two fights into his professional career, the mild-mannered Tszyu is not one for trash talk, but he showed he had a bit of rock star in him.

He leapt into the arms of his trainer and jumped on the ropes, pumping his arms to the raucous crowd at the Newcastle Entertainment centre.

Tszyu is only in the early stages of his professional boxing career after returning to the sport, but if Wednesday night’s display was anything to go by, Australian boxing has a bona fide superstar on his hands.
