‘Best boxing family ever’: World champion Tim Tszyu’s new goal
Tim Tszyu has no intention of soaking up the glory of his world title win for too long because it’s just one step in a plan for domination.
As his family and friends feasted on a Chinese food celebration, new world champion Tim Tszyu didn’t “pig out”, adamant he wasn’t getting lost in the glory of his victory on Sunday because there was more conquering to be done.
Even the message from his famous father Kostya that his superstar son “made some mistakes” in his epic win over Tony Harrison on Sunday resonated with the 28-year-old, who won’t be taking much time off ahead of his undisputed title fight with Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas in July.
Tszyu made no secret that he wanted “all four belts”, having claimed the WBO super-middleweight belt, which, with his younger brother Nikita winning his own fight last weekend, and the achievements of his father, adds to an even bigger aim.
“The goal now is the best boxing family ever lived,” Tszyu said, confirming he would base himself in the US to prepare for his fight with Charlo.
“Dad said good, job, well done, you made a couple of mistakes though. Far out man.
“Nah, we caught up and he was really happy, it was a big moment for him as well.”
In the wake of his triumph, Tszyu didn’t do what he would normally do; relax and chow down during the celebrations.
It’s because he’s now moving to a fight the “whole world is talking about” and he knows he needs to go to another level.
“Usually, I’m pigging out but this time I was like, not too bad, you know, had a nice little healthy breakfast this morning. So I know what’s on the horizon,” he said.
“And I don’t want to start pigging out and start getting excited with things.
“It‘s I feel like it’s an achievement. It feels great. You know, waking up and I’ve got these bonuses, world champion in front of me, it’s pretty cool. But there’s a lot more to go. I want all four belts.
“The fight with Charlo is definitely now a bigger fight for sure. The whole world knows about it, and everyone’s commentating on it, and everyone’s got their own opinion, so it does make the fight bigger.
“Of course I gained way more knowledge. I was able to go another prep to go through fight week, all this is invaluable experience.”
Tsyzu also has a strong message for the “haters” as he prepares to enter into what looms as the biggest fight preparation of his career
“I always knew the bottom of my heart that this is where I belong, so this is this part of the job, part of what I do, so I just got to enjoy it,” he said.
“I think haters always gonna hate that. There’s always going to be critics and there’s always gonna be people that are putting you down, so stuff ’em.”
