Anthony Mundine's career has come to a pitiful end after being knocked out senseless in an embarrassing final fight with Michael Zerafa.

The curtain has finally fallen on Anthony Mundine's rollercoaster boxing career after he was beaten into retirement by Michael Zerafa in a sad final farewell in Bendigo on Saturday night.

Mundine has confirmed he is hanging up the gloves for good after showing he is nowhere near the class needed to fight stars of Zerafa's level.

Zerafa's first round knockout win is the exact statement victory he needed to keep his dream of a blockbuster all-Australian showdown with Tim Tszyu alive.

Mundine had been widely criticised for returning to the ring after suffering painful recent losses to Jeff Horn and John Wayne Parr - and the critics were proven to be right just seconds into Saturday's fight night at Bendigo Stadium.

The 45-year-old former world champion was an embarrassment in his final fight - never laying a glove on Zerafa and being knocked down twice in two minutes. He was officially put out of his misery at the 2.09mins mark in the first round.

It was the saddest of endings for one of the most unmissable careers Australian boxing has ever known.

He heads into the sunset with the stain of several final ugly defeats clinging to him. The only blessing is that Mundine was largely unhurt and was able to speak during the post-fight interviews in the ring. 

Finally, four years after his first retirement, Mundine has got the message to quit before he suffers serious damage.
