‘Absolutely devastating’: Boxing champion dead at 28

Tributes have flowed for Scottish boxing champion Andrew Tham, who died at the age of 28 in news that has shocked the sport.

A Scottish boxing champion has died following a horror crash on his motorbike days after a huge title fight.

Andrew Tham, 28, was out on his beloved Kawasaki bike when he collided with a Hyundai Tucson car on the B8039, near to Lenziemill Road, Cumbernauld just north of Glasgow on May 30.

Officers were called to the scene at around 6.50pm.

Andrew was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with serious injuries.

Sadly, he passed away at the hospital on Sunday, June 2.

The driver and passengers of the car were taken to the University Hospital Monklands, Airdrie, and released after treatment for minor injuries.

The crash happened just days after Andrew lost to undefeated George Stewart in their Celtic Featherweight title fight.

After the devastating news, Stewart paid tribute to his competitor and said it was “an absolute honour” to share the ring with him two weeks ago.

He wrote: “I’m absolutely devastated to hear the news of Andy Tham passing.

“It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to share the ring with him two weeks ago. A true warrior.

“I have no words to describe this devastating news other than heart breaking.

“My thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends.”

More tributes have since flooded in for the boxer on social media.

One person wrote: “Very sad news. Literally watched him headline the Ravenscraig weeks ago – life is so precious. Thinking of his poor family.”

Another said: “Only seen him boxing a few weeks ago at Ravenscraig, such a tragedy.”

A third added: “Absolutely devastating, I can’t believe it.”

A fourth said: “One life taken too early. My thoughts are with both involved friends and families.”

Police confirmed that enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the crash.

And they have urged anyone with information to get in touch.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder from the Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: “Our thoughts are very much with Andrew’s family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Enquiries into the full circumstances of this crash continue.”
