Patty Mills creates three-point NBA history

Brian Goorjian couldn’t be happier to see Patty Mills dominate the NBA this season like he does for the Australian national team.

Mills has been in career-best form for San Antonio this season after promising to deliver his finest Australian efforts on the world’s best league.

His pledge has resulted in the gifted guard averaging 14.2 points a game with the Spurs while he is shooting better than ever before from beyond the arc.

On Tuesday, Mills became the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made off the bench for one team.

He passed former Spurs teammate Manu Ginobili with his 930th three to finish with 21 points in a win over Portland.

Mills’ form certainly doesn’t shock Goorjian, especially in an Olympic year.

“I’ve been following Patty closely and what he has done for the Boomers over the years has been remarkable,” Goorjian said.

“There has been some conjecture about NBA players playing at the Olympics, but there is none of that with Patty.

“I think if it were mid-season or even halftime in San Antonio, he would fly, put his Boomers top on and play.

“I mean, he is all about the Boomers.

“He was the one that I was first involved when I coached Australia at Beijing in 2008, so the chance to experience this again with Patty was a big reason to come back and come and try and achieve something special.”

Mills is honoured to surpass former Spurs teammate Ginobili in the NBA’s three-point record books.

“Manu was the perfect example of (accepting) his role, number one, and then just making the most of that opportunity by being who he is,” Mills said.

“We’ve heard many stories about how he made Pop pull his hair out because of the flair he played with, but that was his identity.”
