For the first time in 55 years and 27 meetings they defeated Team USA, taking the match 98-94 in a stunning performance at Marvel Stadium.
There were plenty of heroes but it was San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills who was the man for Australia down the stretch, as he nailed the last 10 points of the match in a dynamic display.
Mills would eventually ice the game with one of two from the free-throw line as he rounded out a 30-point performance.
The scenes were truly unbelievable as Mills, Andrew Bogut, Joe Ingles and Matthew Dellavedova were all truly influential.
The last quarter run started when Ingles hit a massive three-pointer over Myles Turner with 3:33 remaining on the clock to give Australia the lead back at 88-87.
They had led 78-76 at three-quarter time but the USA had gone on an 8-0 run to take back the ascendancy. After that it was the Patty Mills show.
After Ingles made his bucket Dellavedova did his thing and proved an absolute pest on defence before Bogut pulled down a vital board and Mills banked in a massive three – it was his fourth of the match.
Mills had been cold for most of the early fourth after exploding for 10 points in the third quarter to help Australia take the lead.
From the moment he banked in the three it was all Mills, all the time on offence, his speed and cutting caused the USA massive problems as he first hit a pull-up two, then cut to the basket for a lay up and then hit a two over Donovan Mitchell in his blitz.
Mitchell then answered back with a three of his own to cut the margin to three points before some amazing Team USA defence managed to force a shot clock violation as Ingles put up an airball with the clock expiring.
But ultimately Australia held on as the USA missed shots down the stretch and their long win streak of 66 matches overall and 26 over Australia was at an end.
Social media of course went into meltdown with plenty of Aussie fans getting involved over the big win.
If Mills was the man who got the buckets the performance from Bogut was equally amazing.
The former No.1 Draft pick showed he can still ball on a night where he was strong on the boards, scored 16 points himself and also managed to play point centre at times.
The Boomers had to weather a hot start from the USA as Harrison Barnes (20 points) and captain Kemba Walker (22) went to work early on but by halftime they had cut the deficit to one point and were down 49-48.
The USA even got out to a 10-point lead in the third quarter when Jayson tatum threw down a dunk but the Aussies led 78-76 at the end of the third before holding on for the famous victory.
