Boomers guard Ben Simmons creates history to become a three-time NBA All-Star

Ben Simmons isn’t everyone’s favourite player, but he has defied the doubters to pick up his third successive NBA All-Star appearance.

The Basketball Show: 2021 Season - Episode 4

Australian Ben Simmons has his critics, but he is a three-time NBA All-Star after being named an Eastern Conference reserve for the third straight season.

Simmons’ inclusion is a testament to his all-round game and winning influence at the Philadelphia 76ers, but his selection has raised some eyebrows.

The Melbourne-born guard doesn’t have a jump shot and struggles to fire from range, which are must-have qualities according to some experts and fans.

This view is particularly prominent in America, with many critics believing Simmons is undeserving of an All-Star appearance due to his lack of shooting and big scoring compared to other players.

Yet what is often overlooked and undervalued with the Boomers star is his impressive ability to make an impact at both ends of the floor.

Despite no established jump shot, Simmons still averages 15.7 points (last four games 27.8 points) while he regular makes his teammates better with pinpoint passing.

He is also arguably the NBA’s best defender and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate this season.

However, the NBA’s All-Star concept is focused heavily on the fan vote (50 per cent), and the most popular players are usually selected with a focus on big-scoring performers compared to any other facet of the game.

Regardless, Simmons is an All-Star again, and it’s a significant achievement for the Australia’s best player.

There are some players who should feel unlucky to miss out on All-Star selection, including DeMar DeRozan, Trae Young, Domantas Sabonis and Tobias Harris.

LA Lakers star and Western Conference captain LeBron James couldn’t believe the “disrespect” shown to Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker.

“Devin Booker is the most disrespected player in our league!!! Simple as that,” James tweeted.

The NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, March 5 in Atlanta.
