A public marriage proposal at an ice hockey game in New York went horribly wrong on Friday AEDT, with footage of the heartbreaking incident going viral.

During the NHL contest between the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers at UBS Arena, the Kiss Cam panned towards a young man who took his T-shirt off, revealing the words “PLZ SAY YES YES YES” written on his chest.

He bent down on one knee and whipped out an engagement ring, prompting the New York crowd to roar with delight.

But to everyone’s shock, his partner got up from her seat and left the venue.

Boos echoed around the venue as the shattered man returned to his seat and picked up his empty beer.

And to make matters worse, the Panthers scored moments later.

Video of the awkward moment has registered more than 260,000 views on Twitter in less than two hours.

Last week, a public marriage proposal at a Major League Baseball game also went horribly wrong, with the young woman slapping her partner after he opened the box to reveal a Ring Pop.

Florida ultimately claimed a 3-1 victory over the Islanders, with Patric Hornqvist, Matthew Tkachuk and Eetu Luostarinen scoring for the visitors.

The Islanders will next face the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Sunday morning AEDT.
