Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith was in the middle of a solid first season with his new team when the unthinkable happened.

In a game against the Houston Texans in the third quarter, Smith snapped the ball only to be swarmed by Houston’s Kareem Jackson and J.J. Watt.

As the two hulking defenders grabbed Smith and took him to the ground, his right leg buckled underneath and twisted the wrong way, resulting in a horrific compound fracture.

The game was brought to a standstill as Smith lay on the turf screaming in pain as doctors rushed to his side. The fan base and those watching on held their breath and covered their eyes.

Smith had only joined the Redskins ahead of the 2018 season after putting pen to paper on a lofty 4-year, $94 million deal. But it all fell apart as his leg crumbled beneath him.

Since the injury, Smith has undergone 17 surgeries on his leg as well as spending eight months with his leg inside a metal contraption. Despite stating previously how he almost lost his life, Smith is on the comeback trail.

But days after a teaser for an upcoming documentary on his incredible journey and path back to the NFL was released, an image from days following his first surgery emerged.

Following the first operation on his mangled leg, Smith was left in hospital dealing with an infection that threatened not only his leg ... but his life.

What you’re about to see is the image of Smith’s leg, we’re not joking when we say this isn’t for those with a weak stomach.

WARNING: Graphic.

The former signal caller is determined to get back to the big time and an upcoming documentary titled ‘Project 11’ shows the incredible journey of overcoming the injury.

“From what I understand this has never happened to a professional athlete,” Smith says in the trailer.

“For me it’s the challenge of that, my future, nobody knows it.”
