Kansas City Chiefs defeat San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 after camera controversy

The Kansas City Chiefs secured a miraculous comeback after a touchdown that was impossible to rule on because of bad camera work.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended a 50-year championship drought with a 31-20 win against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54, erasing a double digit comeback with a 21-0 fourth quarter.

The Chiefs appeared dead and buried after two interceptions from star quarterback Patrick Mahomes contributed to a 20-10 deficit with less than seven minutes remaining.

But Mahomes produced late magic, connecting on downfield bombs to Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins to get the scoreboard moving before a controversial score by running back Damien Williams.

Mahomes found Williams in space and he scooted to the corner and was ruled to have reached the ball across the goal line just before stepping out of play.

Replays of 49ers corner Richard Sherman's desperate attempt to bump Williams out of bounds were inconclusive.

It put the Chiefs up 24-20 with 2:44 remaining as viewers erupted over replays not providing the necessary angle to make the correct call.

The Super Bowl win was Kansas City’s first NFL Championship since its triumph over the Minnesota Vikings in 1970.

But as the pressure in the fourth quarter mounted, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s sure touch deserted him and the Niners' offence dried up.
