NBA Wrap: Ingles shatters Jazz record, Clippers superstars back with a bang

Joe Ingles has absolutely smashed a long standing record as he continues one of the great Aussie NBA journey’s ever seen.

Aussie NBA star Joe Ingles’ story to get to the big show is one that shows you should never give up as the seven-year veteran shattered Hall of Famer John Stockton’s all-time made three-pointers record for the Utah Jazz.

Ingles broke the record with a pair of triples in the first quarter of the Jazz’ 120-101 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Ingles’ second three was his 846th in just his 493rd game, beating Stockton’s 845 threes, which took him 1504 games over 17 seasons.

They turned out to be his only two three pointers of the game, but he rushed to the record with seven in the 116-104 win over the Mavericks earlier in the week.

Ingles has shown exactly why he has one of the best stories in the NBA, having gone undrafted in the 2009 Draft before playing throughout Europe until he got a pre-season shot with the LA Clippers in 2014.

But he was release before the Jazz took a shot, making his debut two days after joining the club.

He’s now spent seven years with the Jazz and after signing a one-year $US14m extension for the Jazz last year on top of his four-year $52 million contract in 2017.

Ingles has always been a good shooter, even going head-to-head with triple-point king Steph Curry in 2018 when he called himself the “best shooter in the league”.

Asked about it a few days later, the Aussie said it was no joke.

“No, I am,” Ingles responded. “The numbers I’ve shot, the percentages, they obviously are what they are and people are going to dissect everything, but I honestly feel like they’re all going to go in when I shoot the ball.

“When I feel like it’s my shot within the flow of our offence and getting in any rhythm, I feel like I should make every one of them. That’s why it pisses me off so much in practice when I miss open shots because I feel like I should make them.”

While current teammates Mike Conley and Bogdan Bogdanovic have more threes in their careers, Ingles is 169 on the all-time NBA list of total threes.

For reference, the all-time three-point leader is Ray Allen with 2973 with Curry in second.

CLIPPERS PAIR EXPLODE ON RETURN

All-stars Paul George and Kawhi Leonard combined for 50 points in their return from the COVID-19 unavailable list as the Los Angeles Clippers routed the Orlando Magic 116-90.

George finished with a team-high 26 points and nine rebounds while Leonard tallied 24 points for the Clippers, who continued their dominance over the Magic by winning their 14th straight contest in a stretch dating back seven years.

“Just having their presence was huge for us,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “We needed those guys tonight. I thought our team was a little tired, but we fought through it.”

Leonard and George had been out of the line-up since Monday and did not join the team at the start of their current six-game road trip. They were both cleared to play earlier Friday at Amway Center arena in Orlando.

“It was good,” George said of the added rest. “I took care of my body and rested. I just chilled and relaxed in the house with my family.”

In their absence, the Clippers were 1-1, losing 108-99 to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday and defeating the Heat in Miami on Thursday 109-105.
