While it might not be the way he wanted to, injured Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant is set to step onto the court for the first time this season — at least in the virtual world.

With the NBA still shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, 16 NBA stars are set to suit up in the virtual world with a tournament to find the NBA’s best NBA 2K20 superstar to be crowned.

Live sport starved fans will be able to see the likes of Durant, Atlanta Hawks All-Star Trae Young, Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell and the Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker among a star studded line up for the event.

And it’s for a great cause with the winner getting $100,000 to give to a charity supporting coronavirus relief efforts.

“We're thrilled to partner with the NBA and NBPA to bring basketball back to fans throughout the world and to help those in need during these uncertain times,” Jason Argent, 2K senior vice president, sports strategy and licensing said.

“Entertainment, especially sports, has the ability to bring communities together — including athletes, fans and families — and we hope that everyone will enjoy the tournament.”

Durant will like up as the top seeded player with the 16 seedings based on the players’ rankings in NBA 2K20.

Games will be played at 10am AEDT on ESPN on Kayo on Saturday morning, as well as 3am AEDT on Monday morning.

Quarterfinals will take place on Wednesday at 10am, while the semi-finals and finals are still to be determined but will place on Sunday April 12 Australian time.

Durant had tested positive to coronavirus but he and three other teammates who had fallen ill have been cleared of the illness, Nets general manager Sean Marks said yesterday.

“So far, everybody is healthy. The guys that were, that tested positive, have cleared their 14 days self-isolation and quarantine,” Marks said. “They’re still practising with social distancing like the rest of us. They are cleared like everybody, like the rest of the team and the staff right now.”

Meanwhile, Durant is ready to go in the tournament.

Second year star Young also posted “this will be fun” while retweeting the schedule, but has also been pumping out TikTok videos.
