NBA star Nikola Jokic has tested positive to COVID-19 after mingling with tennis icon Novak Djokovic in their native Serbia.

NBA star Nikola Jokic has tested positive for coronavirus in Serbia, delaying his return to the United States in the lead-up to the season restart.

According to ESPN, Denver Nuggets All-Star centre Jokic has been asymptomatic since testing positive last week. Per the report, he is expected to be cleared to travel to Denver within a week.

Jokic, 25, was in the Serbian capital of Belgrade for an exhibition game on June 15. One of the players who participated in the game and was later seen in close proximity to Jokic, Nikola Kankovic, tested positive to COVID-19 soon after.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic, who was also sitting next to Jokic at the event, announced he had tested positive overnight.

The world No. 1 is one of four players who have contracted coronavirus after competing in Djokovic’s Adria Tour in Serbia and Croatia, which went ahead without any social distancing precautions.

This morning, Djokovic admitted he was “wrong” to push ahead with the tournament.

Social media has been abuzz at the news both Jokic and Djokovic — arguably Serbia’s two highest-profile athletes — have tested positive after ignoring social distancing advice.

NBA players who left their home team market dring the season shutdown were scheduled to return on June 15 for testing as they prepare for the campaign to restart in July.

The Nuggets are 43-22, third in the Western Conference, as the NBA season resumes.
