Golden State Warriors win NBA championship over Boston Celtics

The Golden State Warriors have claimed a fourth championship in eight years, dominating the Boston Celtics 103-90 in a masterpiece performance in game six.

The Warriors led the series 3-2 leading into the game and made no mistake, dominating after the Celtics raced to a huge early lead.

The Warriors have been an absolute dynasty, making six of the last eight and sealing a fourth ring.

The Celtics got off to a flyer early, racing to 14-2 and 18-10 before the Warriors fought back, scoring the last 11 points to finish the first quarter 27-22.

And after his poor showing in game five where he broke a streak of 233 games with at least one three-pointer, Curry was heating up again as the Warriors continued the onslaught in the second quarter.

Draymond Green said Curry would be “livid going into game 6” and Curry clearly had something to prove.

After he slotted his second three-pointer, which required Curry to beat Al Horford and wait for Derrick White’s desperate defensive effort before he slotted the three.

It stretched the lead to 14 and the commentators said of the moment: “We’re witnessing greatness.”

The lead was as big as 21 in the second quarter for the Warriors and finished 54-39.

Halfway through the third, Curry nailed a huge three from deep to reinstate a 22 point lead, pointing to his ring finger in a message to the Boston crowd.

It may have been the catalyst to snap Boston from their lethargy as the Celtics went 16-4 for the rest of the quarter to narrow the lead to 10 and raise hopes of sending it to game seven.

Boston reduced it down to eight with five minutes to raise the tension but every time the Celtics had a question, the Warriors had the answer.

With three minutes left, Curry took the oxygen out of the TD Garden, nailing a three to make it a 15-point lead and essentially wrapping the result.

At the final buzzer, Curry burst into tears.

In the past three title wins, Curry wasn’t named the Finals MVP as Andre Iguodala and twice Kevin Durant kept Curry away from the player of the finals award.

But after his 34 points, seven assists and seven rebounds, there was no denying Curry after yet another tremendous performance.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, Curry said “this one hits different”.

The Warriors had gone to five straight finals but the 2019-20 season, the Warriors were the worst team in the NBA after season-long injuries to Klay Thompson and Curry, and the departure of Durant.

“I’m so proud of this group, I thank god every day that I get to play this game at the highest level with some amazing people,” Curry said.

“We know this is what it’s all about, playing for a championship and what we’ve been through for the past three years. At the beginning of the season nobody thought we’d be here, except everybody on this court right now. It’s amazing. It’s very surreal now.

“We were so far away from it. We were here five straight years, got three of them. And then we hit rock bottom with injuries and the long road of work and just trying to fill in the right pieces and right guys. You can never take this for granted, you never know when you’ll be back here and to get it done means the world.”

Coach Steve Kerr, who has won four titles as coach and five more as a player on the Chicago Bulls, praised Curry’s performance.

“This might be the unlikely one of all but I’ve just been blessed, I just hang around superstars,” Kerr said.

“If you hang around superstars, good things happen.”
