Ben Simmons has drawn the ire of Alan Jones after reportedly snubbing junior fans

Radio broadcaster Alan Jones has added his two cents to the ongoing criticism surrounding Australian basketball superstar Ben Simmons.

Ben Simmons has come under fire from radio host Alan Jones after the Australian NBA star was said to have snuck out the side door and avoided fans waiting outside his basketball camp.

Kids aged seven to 18 reportedly turned up for the camp at the Hills Basketball Stadium in Castle Hill hosted by the Philadelphia 76ers guard who has made serious waves since debuting in the NBA in 2018.

But since he has arrived back in Australia to join the Boomers squad for training camp along with hosting basketball camps for juniors, the backlash has come in thick and fast.

It started when Simmons posted a video to his Instagram page stating he and friends had been denied entry into Melbourne’s Crown Casino due to racial profiling.

The story quickly made international headlines and criticism from several Australian media personalities quickly piled up, forcing Simmons to double down — and then saw his sister Olivia respond vigorously to the backlash.

2GB broadcaster Steve Price floated the theory that Simmons defended his stance in order to boost prospects for a documentary about Adam Goodes he helped to finance.

Now fellow 2GB broadcaster Alan Jones has taken aim at the Australian basketball phenom, telling him to “go back to America”.

“This bloke has lost a lot of people very quickly,” Jones said on 2GB.

“He had promised to play for Australia at the upcoming World Cup only to pull out due to scheduling issues. He withdrew from the warm up games even though fans had spent hundreds of dollars hoping to watch him play.

“And I’m told he held two training camps for junior basketball players in Sydney and Melbourne. I understand that when he arrived he walked straight past the fans, who had been waiting for hours, he refused to sign autographs or say hello.

“Ben Simmons, I know you’re an Australian but go back to America and stay there.”

Those who missed out on spots for the camp queued outside waiting for the superstar to emerge in the hopes of getting an autograph or photo of their idol.

Fans had gathered outside a doorway where a tinted Mercedes was parked, only for the Aussie to emerge from a different door and jump into the car without stopping for pictures or autographs, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Simmons returned to Australia and participated in a training camp with the Boomers squad ahead of their upcoming warm-up games across the country before the FIBA World Cup.

He hosted camps in both Melbourne and Sydney before flying out on Monday. He’ll return to America where he’ll turn his focus on the upcoming 2019/20 NBA season with the 76ers looking to capture the Eastern Conference crown.
