Houston Astros star Yuli Gurriel slammed for racist gesture
THIS sports star has copped a ban after being caught ridiculing a rival player on camera — costing him upwards of $400,000.
HOUSTON Astros star Yuli Gurriel has come under fire after being caught ridiculing Japanese player Yu Darvish on live television during yesterday’s Game 3 of the World Series.
The 33-year-old star was snapped using his hands to slant his eyes while in the dugout.
Gurriel copped a five-game ban beginning next season, meaning he is set to lose roughly $320,855 (A$416,000) out of his scheduled $12 million 2018 pay packet.
“There is no excuse or explanation that makes that type of behaviour acceptable,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters at a press conference detailing the Cuban star’s punishment.
The decision to keep the Astros’ first baseman from missing any World Series games has come under fire from disgruntled fans.
Manfred addressed critics’ woes, claiming it was unfair to punish the rest of the Houston team for the act of one player.
“I understand that people may have different views,” Manfred said. “But it was my best judgment that this timing was appropriate.”
Darvish responded almost immediately on Twitter with a classy reply.

“No one is perfect,” he said. “That includes both you and I. What (Gurriel) has done today isn’t right, but I believe we should put our effort into learning rather than to accuse him. If we can take something from this, that is a giant step for mankind. Since we are living in such a wonderful world, let’s stay positive and move forward instead of focusing on anger. I’m counting on everyone’s big love.”
Gurriel told commissioner Manfred he’d be giving a private apology to Darvish
We at the #MLB unanimously choose to punish Gurrielâs racist act, not now, but next year in games that statistically donât matter at all.

@astros Yuri Gurriel should have lost the privilege of playing in our World Series!

Manfred praised Darvish’s response soon after the mess.
“He has handled this entire difficult situation in an exemplary way,” he said.
“Especially noteworthy is his expressed view that we should all use this negative incident as an opportunity for learning and deeper understanding.”
