Lloyd McClendon goes absolutely berserk after call goes against Mariners

LLOYD McClendon has a history of losing his cool, but his most recent outburst is his best performance yet.

IF ever there was proof that baseball and low blood pressure don’t mix, this is it.

Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon went absolutely nuts when a call went against his side in Tuesday night’s match against the New York Yankees.

Alex Rodriguez, sitting on a full count, walked on what Mariners catcher Mike Zunino thought was a strike.

Zunino had a go at the first base official Will Little and was sent from the game, but this was only just the beginning of the show as McClendon stormed onto the field and took centre stage.

The 56 year-old looked like he was going to explode as he remonstrated with Little, tearing his hat off, throwing it down and then kicking it along the dirt.

As the crowd roared to life, the former MLB star marched towards home plate umpire Mike DiMuro to give him a spray.

Despite already being given his marching orders, McClendon didn’t want Tony Randazzo to miss out on the action, so he gave a performance that looked half stroke, half dance routine in the third base official’s face.

With no more umpires left to abuse, the former Detroit Lions hitting coach turned his attention back to his hat before exiting the game to a standing ovation from wildly enthralled fans.

This type of behaviour isn’t uncommon for McClendon, as Tuesday night capped off his 31st career ejection.

His anger would have been compounded by the fact the Yankees came out on top in the clash 5-3.

Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer in the top of the 11th inning to give the Yankees the lead and Andrew Miller preserved the win in the bottom half by striking out Nelson Cruz with two on.

Stephen Drew tied it in the ninth with an RBI double off Seattle closer Fernando Rodney as New York took the first two games of this three-game series.

With two outs, Jones drilled a fastball over the wall in centre off reliever Joe Beimel, who relieved Tom Wilhelmsen (1-1) after he allowed two-out hits to Drew and Brett Gardner.

Justin Wilson (2-0) pitched a clean 10th for the win. Miller gave up an RBI single to Robinson Cano in the 11th.

Then with Cano and Austin Jackson, who was hit by a pitch from the Yankees closer to reach base for the sixth time, aboard, Miller struck out Cruz for his 16th save.
