Jarryd Hayne NFL: San Francisco hitman has some advice for rookie
SAN Francisco 49ers linebacker Nick Moody feasts on running backs and the 111 kilogram hitman has Jarryd Hayne firmly in his sights.
SAN Francisco 49ers linebacker Nick Moody feasts on running backs, but he says he won’t attempt to demolish Australian rookie Jarryd Hayne on the practice field.
Moody and Hayne are set to go head-to-head at the 49ers’ first full contact practice at the team’s Levi’s Stadium on Tuesday (Wednesday 9am AEST).
It’s the first time the 49ers will don pads and helmets at their training camp.
HIGH PRAISE: Hayne has friends in the right place
For former Parramatta Eel NRL star Hayne, who for the past few months has been training in shorts and T-shirts, it’ll be the first time he will have pads and a helmet on while facing the NFL’s elite.
The 185cm tall, 111kg Moody has a reputation for running over the top of opposing players, something Hayne noted at a press conference on the weekend.
“Maybe I’ll talk to him and see,” Moody said when AAP asked if he will run over the top of Hayne if given the chance.
Moody smiled and then said he wouldn’t try to steamroll Hayne initially.
“I don’t want to just go out there in his first rep of full contact and just run over him,” Moody added.
His advice for Hayne was to stay low to the ground.
“Pad level,” he said.
“That’s my biggest piece of advice.
“You have to keep your pads down.
“Keep good leverage.”
The team will cut the 90-man squad to 75 on September 1, then to the final 53 players four days later.
They play their first regular season game against the Minnesota Vikings on September 14.
Head coach Jim Tomsula wouldn’t say if he thought Hayne would make it on to the 53-man roster or on the smaller practice squad, but was full of praise for the Australian.
“I don’t have a crystal ball and I don’t want to predict,” Tomsula said.
“It doesn’t do any good for anybody.”
