Jarryd Hayne and 49ers rookies told to ‘act like the white guys’
JARRYD Hayne has been getting expert advice from some of the sharpest minds in the game, but what this NFL legend had to say shocked everyone.
ONE of the first things Jarryd Hayne was told at the San Francisco 49ers was to reel in his off-field misbehaviour.
The advice came from 49ers future Hall of Fame inductee Charles Haley when he addressed Hayne and the team’s entire rookie squad for the 2015 season.
Haley has revealed his speech to the 49ers players at its annual Rookie Minicamp in May included a few controversial declarations the players were not happy to hear.
Hayne attended the Rookie Minicamp in May and even features in a highlight video of the camp compiled by the team’s media department.
Haley said his speech to the playing group of rookies and new free agents aimed to let players learn from the mistakes he made during his career.
“As far as the rookies, and I know they probably got mad, but I said, ‘Why don’t you all act like the white guys? You never see them in the paper getting high or hitting people. Why don’t you act like that?’ They all looked at me crazy,” Haley told the San Jose Mercury News.
“I just did it for the shock value of it. The hardest thing is these guys, they have an attention span of a five-year-old. I’m not the most gentle and kind person to sit there and deal with that crap. I’m a little more confrontational. I think I got my point across.”
The retired linebacker played 14 seasons in the NFL, finishing with the 49ers in 1999 having won a record five Superbowl championships with the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys.
However, he admits he had his fair share of off-field issues.
The 49ers reportedly grew so tired of his problems they traded him in 1992 to rivals Dallas.
He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on August 8.
He is not the first person to accuse the 49ers playing roster of needing to focus more on football after the team revealed earlier this year players are given breaks every half hour to check their phones and browse social media.
Coach Jim Tomsula was incredulous at the time that his players could concentrate for more than 27 minutes.
Hayne must report back for his next training camp on Monday after spending the break following the 49ers second minicamp last month having a cyst surgically removed from the arch of his left foot.
He has until September 5 to prove he deserves a spot on the team’s 53-man final roster or could be given a lifeline in the 49ers 10-man practice squad decided on September 6.
