How Jarryd Hayne found out he had made the final cut
AFTER a nervous wait, Jarryd Hayne’s future in the NFL was sealed with a simple text message from his new coach.
JARRYD Hayne’s fate was sealed on Sunday morning (AEST) when 49ers coach Jim Tomsula alerted the 27-year-old via text message that he had successfully argued his case and managed to push his name onto the San Francisco roster.
In true Tomsula fashion, the message was short and sweet:
“Welcome to the starting line, it’s a long race.”
Speaking during a media conference call, Tomsula revealed his admiration for the man who left a successful career in Australia to pursue an idolised dream in the NFL.
“He was at the top of his sport, and from what I understand, he was a national figure back home,” Tomsula said.

“He put that on hold, walked away from that to try something new. That’s very courageous.
“His situation is unique. I can’t say enough about his approach and the kind of person he is. He’s a world-class athlete.
“Making an NFL roster is an outstanding accomplishment. I can’t say enough about his approach.”
Tomsula further emphasised the enormity of Hayne’s achievement — one which is often outside the reach of seasoned Gridiron players.
“You’re talking about a guy coming into a game he’s never played. The odds of an American who grows up in this game playing in the NFL is astronomical,” he said.
“Now you’re talking about a guy who wasn’t raised in this game and has made it. It’s a tremendous achievement, and I think that’s why everybody is so enamored with it.”
However among his praise, Tomsula made sure to keep the Aussie grounded.
“He’s by no means a finished product. We feel like he will continue to grow and get better,” he said.
The NRL convert spoke of his unusual nerves prior to receiving confirmation from Tomsula.
“It was probably the last 10 minutes, like what’s going on? Do I get a phone call? Is someone going to call me and tell me I have a job?” Hayne said.
“It was the most nervous I’ve been in a while.
“It was more trying to get confirmation than anything. And then it was a sigh of relief.”
Hayne received Tomsula’s text while out touring the Bay Area with his family.
“For them to see something different in me and want to explore that option, it’s really those guys I need to thank, for opening the door and giving me the opportunity,” Hayne said.
Hayne told the media he was ecstatic to be given the opportunity to progress in the NFL, and was taken aback by the outpouring of support he had received.
“This whole journey was never about making a roster or being on a team,” Hayne said.
“It was about giving myself an opportunity. I wanted to take a risk, put myself out there and put my faith in action.
“Faith without action is dead. This whole journey, I’ve never felt so alive.”
“The support has just been incredible. It really has,” Hayne said.
“Words don’t really describe how great it is, to see so many people support me, and all the Aussies in the NFL.
“I can’t begin to thank them and everyone back home for the love and support.”
