7-foot Makur Maker, cousin of Thon plays as dominant point guard

He stands as tall as most big men in the NBA, but he plays like a guard and he’s making basketball fans all over the globe pay attention.

Thon Maker comes home to get in the green and gold for the Boomers

At 18 years of age and 2.10m tall Makur Maker, the cousin of current Milwaukee Bucks star Thon, is starting to make waves in the US, both for his imposing physical frame and his ability to play guard as a near seven-footer.

The teenager has impressive size; long arms, broad shoulders, explosive athleticism, and range on his jump-shot to go with good vision and rim protection on defence.

And now a mixtape of the Orange Lutheran High School product has made waves online with the video showing the youngest member of the family dropping some James Harden-like step back threes.

He also explodes above the rim on several occasions in the footage to dunk the ball in impressive fashion, showing he has some of the same hops as his more famous cousin.

His skills have already attracted interest from colleges with UCLA offering him a scholarship, should he want to go, or just like his cousin Thon he might opt to enter the NBA Draft straight from high school.

In terms of his high school form he is also performing well above the national average, scoring 13 points per game and grabbing 6.3 rebounds, while also getting 2.3 blocks per game.

Maker grew up in Perth, having moved there with his family at the age of one from South Sudan, and his guardian believes unlike Thon, he could actually make it in the NBA as a primary ball handler.

“Makur is a modern day point forward,” Maker’s guardian, Ed Smith, told foxsports.com.au.

“Very good vision. Passes the ball extremely well. Can hit the catch and shoot, can hit the pulp off the bounce. Has range up to 23, 24 feet. He has a good frame. On the defensive end, he can switch two to five.”

Maker also got to work out with cousin Thon in the off-season so he can get a taste of what it’s like to train at the elite level and what is required as he looks at a future that includes not only the NBA but also the Boomers.

And if Thon’s reaction is anything to go by then Makur Maker could indeed be something special.

What he does after high school remain to be seen but he clearly has the size and development to get many in the basketball world excited.
