Will Minson's penalty for stomping on Kieren Jack's leg seems grossly inadequate

IF Joel Selwood risked hurting his brother Adam, then Will Minson risked breaking Kieren Jack's leg.

IF Joel Selwood risked hurting his brother Adam, then Will Minson risked breaking Kieren Jack's leg.

The Bulldogs ruckman, who is listed as weighing 109kg, intentionally stomped on Jack and will sit for a week.

The penalty seems terribly inadequate.

No one likes taking advantage of a bloke on the deck, and Minson did exactly that. It's a low act, whether it's on the sporting field or on a street corner.

An early plea - which was ridiculous because he was plainly guilty - and a five-year good record meant Minson received two matches but was able to walk away with one.

Ten days ago, Selwood received a reprimand for pushing his brother Adam at Subiaco.

Selwood's action, as he rolled over his brother, was ruled as low impact.

Remarkably, Minson's stomping of Jack was also ruled to be low impact.

How can a push and a stomp be considered of equal impact?

Selwood was done over because his brother might have been injured, which the AFL frowns upon.

Minson, the big lug, could easily have broken Jack's leg, but that isn't a consideration for the AFL.

Sydney's medical report, obtained by the match review panel, obviously reported Jack suffered no injury.

Minson is extremely lucky. Moments before the stomping, he knocked Jack to the ground after making contact to his upper chest and neck area.

The panel deemed the contact "below that required to constitute a reportable offence".

So, belting a bloke to the ground is less impact than what Selwood did to his brother. And then came the stomp.

The most famous stomp in football was Dermott Brereton's on former Hawthorn teammate Rayden Tallis's head in 1994.

Brereton received seven weeks at a time when violence was more accepted. In today's clean-cut age, one match for stomping is plainly nonsense and not in tune with current standards.

Minson has gained and lost this year. His football is probably the best of his career, but his behaviour has been shabby.

First the Danyle Pearce incident, and now the Jack incident. What he said about Pearce's mother has, in the end, resulted in the same penalty.

"Big Will" can't get sympathy votes on this one.
