CARLTON says Patrick Cripps will be ready for Round 1 despite missing a second NAB Challenge game in a row.

Cripps was not in the Blues squad announced today to take on Essendon on Sunday and is suffering a bruised knee after a training collision.

The Blues are adamant it is at the minor end of the scale, saying they are taking no risks in the lead-in to their season-opener against Richmond.

They have a fortnight’s break before their final NAB Challenge game and might play another intra-club clash before the March 24 MCG clash.

It means best-and-fairest winner Cripps and captain Marc Murphy (shoulder) will have ample game time before the season.

All five of the club’s draftees have been named in the Ikon Park clash — Blues fans will get a glimpse of the future after the club named Jacob Weitering (pick 1), Harry McKay (10), Charlie Curnow (12), David Cuningham (23) and Jack Silvagni (53).

Recruits Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips and Daniel Gorringe are also in the squad, as well as US basketball project Matt Korcheck.

Essendon’s team will include four top-up players — Ryan Crowley, Jonathan Simpkin, Matt Dea and Sam Grimley — plus draftees Darcy Parish, Mitch Brown and Michael Hartley.

Meanwhile, Richmond has recalled most of its big guns to face Hawthorn, which is resting Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell.

Port Adelaide will also be close to full strength against Melbourne, which is missing Nathan Jones and Bernie Vince.

Adelaide, which opened its NAB Challenge campaign with a 100-point win against West Coast, has added recruits Troy Menzel and Curtley Hampton to its squad to face Fremantle.

Yesterday, Geelong confirmed Patrick Dangerfield will play his first game for Geelong on Friday night against a Collingwood team minus several big names.

The AFL’s biggest off-season recruit has been named in the Cats squad for Friday night’s clash at Simonds Stadium along with new faces Zac Smith and Lachie Henderson.

Collingwood’s side will feature former Lion James Aish but skipper Scott Pendlebury, Travis Cloke, Adam Treloar and Jamie Elliott were left out.

Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs will unveil two recruits against GWS on Thursday but have left comeback kid Tom Liberatore out of the squad.

Liberatore, who missed all of last season after knee surgery, impressed in the Dogs’ intra-club hitout but won’t take the field in Canberra.

Giants recruit Steve Johnson will also be missing.

But the Dogs will unveil former Hawk Matt Suckling and ex-Lion Jed Adcock, along with draftee Kieran Collins.

The Giants will showcase academy draft stars Jacob Hopper, Matthew Kennedy and Harrison Himmelberg.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said both Liberatore and Tom Boyd were close to playing, but the Dogs didn’t want to risk them after they copped a “knock or two” respectively in the past two weeks.

“They’ll almost definitely be right for the second (NAB Challenge game). We’re just being a bit conservative, make sure they’re OK and we’ll line them up against the Demons.

Beveridge said the Dogs’ plan was always to unveil Liberatore in the second pre-season clash against Melbourne in Craigieburn.

“He’s fit, he’s healthy, he played really well in our intra-club the other week,” Beveridge said.

“It’s disappointing he’s not playing Thursday, we would’ve liked to have played him.

“As far as his scheduling goes, we envisaged he’d play NAB 2, but he’s ahead of time and was going to play this week. But we’ve just pulled him conservatively and he’ll play in the second one.”
