VFL on Kayo: Sam Weideman out to push case for Melbourne selection with Casey Demons
He’s one of the form forwards in the country — the only issue for Sam Weideman is he’s been dominating the VFL.
Casey Demons coach Mark Corrigan believes out-of-favour Melbourne forward Sam Weideman must continue to take his opportunities at VFL level in order to break into the senior line-up.
Since returning from a stress-fracture in his right leg, Weideman has booted 14.6 from three games for Casey but has been on the outer due to the form of Melbourne’s tall forwards.
The Demons’ undefeated start has meant positions are at the premium as competition heats up for a spot in their best 22.
“We’ve seen ‘Weids’ play really good footy at AFL level … but at the moment those guys are playing their role at AFL level which means he’s unable to force his way in,” Corrigan told the Herald Sun.

“I feel for ‘Weids’, no doubt it’s frustrating … but his attitude has been fantastic which also enables him to play such good footy at VFL level,
“He’s just got to make sure every week that he’s taking that opportunity, whether that be through injury or form, when the chance does arrive at AFL level, he’s ready and that’s what he’s been doing.”
James Harmes also impressed in his first-game back from a wrist injury while a handful of young Demons have caught the eye.
“I thought ‘Harmesy’s’ game in its entirety was a really consistent game,” Corrigan said.
“For him it’s when an opportunity arises hopefully, he’s in really good form and he’s ready to take that opportunity,

“(Tom) Sparrow, (Toby) Bedford and (Kade) Chandler have all been really strong performers consistently throughout the first three games,
“From there it’s probably (Jake) Bowey who has been playing really consistent footy as well.”
In other VFL action this weekend, eyes will be on No.1 pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan when Footscray host Carlton as the forward looks to push his case for a much-anticipated debut.
However, Casey’s push for a fourth straight win will be on pause as their clash with Sydney has been postponed due to the ever-evolving COVID situation in New South Wales.
