Emotional scenes unfolded on Wednesday when North Melbourne veteran Ben Cunnington reunited with his Kangaroos teammates after undergoing chemotherapy.

Cunnington had a testicular tumour removed in July but after routine check-up detected a secondary cancer, the 227-game player began a nine-week course of chemotherapy in the off-season.

In footage captured at pre-season training, Cunnington was seen chatting to senior coach David Noble and club legend Brent Harvey, bouncing the Sherrin and catch up with new teammate Hugh Greenwood.

“I’ve finished my course of treatment and was feeling well enough to drop in and say g’day,” Cunnington said.

“I’ve had such amazing support from everyone at the club and I can’t thank them enough.”

Cunnington is expected to make a full recovery.

Cunnington, 30, has played his entire career to date with North Melbourne and remains one of its most valuable players.

He finished second in North’s best-and-fairest poll last season and won admiration from rivals and teammates alike with his emotional speech at the club’s awards night.

“Just to have the support from the club, the players and my beautiful family — I couldn’t have done it without them,” a teary Cunnington said in October.

“You think you’re a bit more alone, but the support everyone at the top of the club to the fans stuck at home, it’s been huge.

“It actually helps me smile and makes me want to keep continue playing for this great club. It means more than I ever thought.”

For its first game of the 2022 season, North Melbourne will square off with Hawthorn at the MCG on March 20.

Along with Greenwood, the club has highly-rated Richmond tall Callum Coleman-Jones and number one draft pick Jason Horne-Francis into its ranks.
