The late Danny Frawley’s No.2 jumper will hang in St Kilda’s new health centre named in the legend’s honour

The late Danny Frawley is a lionised figure in St Kilda’s history and his old jumper will hang in the new centre named in his honour.

St Kilda will retire the No.2 jumper made famous by club great Danny Frawley and it will instead hang in the new centre named in the legendary defender’s honour.

The Danny Frawley Centre (DFC) for Health and Wellbeing will open to the public on March 7 and will be home this year to the jumper, which was worn by the retired Jake Carlisle last season.

Another former St Kilda No.2, Tony Brown, who is now the club’s player development manager, lauded the decision to pay further homage to Frawley.

“The No.2 is an important number within the history of the St Kilda Football Club and Danny is the first person to come to mind for many Saints fans,” Brown said.

“ ‘Spud’ represented everything great about being part of this football club. He loved his teammates, the fans and Moorabbin almost as much as he loved his family.

“To have this guernsey hanging in the DFC in its debut year – a place specifically built to continue Danny’s legacy – means a lot to me and I know ‘Spud’ would be really proud to see it here.”

The announcement comes as the Saints hand Indigenous hero Nicky Winmar’s former No.7 to first-round draft pick Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, who was selected 11th overall.

Midfield great Lenny Hayes also wore the number on his back for all 297 games he played at St Kilda.

Next Generation Academy recruits Marcus Windhager and Mitch Owens will inherit No.17 and No.24 respectively, while numbers were also allocated to Oscar Adams (27), Jack Peris (45) and Josiah Kyle (46).

Former Bulldog and Kangaroo Tom Campbell assumes the No.38 – after having 45, 15 and 42 at different stages of his 54-game career – while the promising Ryan Byrnes has upgraded from No.31 to 13.
