AFL legend Tony Lockett has stunned fans after making a shock return to the Sydney Swans.

The Swans announced that the AFL’s record goal kicker has rejoined the club and he will work as a specialist coach with the team’s forwards.

Lockett will make the trip to Sydney from his home in Bowral fortnightly to attend training and mentor the likes of Lance Franklin, Sam Reid and Kurt Tippett.

But while the news was a surprise to the AFL community it was his amazing new look that proved most stunning.

Social media was most taken by Lockett’s new slim figure, a marked change from the player who graced AFL fields throughout his time with both St Kilda and the Swans.

Known for carrying a bulkier frame in his playing days, the champion full forward was famously trolled by Sydney fans who snuck a pig into the Sydney Cricket Ground, when Lockett was playing for the Saints.

The animal had Lockett’s no. 4 painted onto its body and was a not so subtle dig at the AFL legend’s weight.

Former Swans player, turned radio star Ryan Fitzgerald shared a hilarious Lockett story on Fox Sports The Back Page on Tuesday night, that concerned the full forwards battle with the bulge.

Fitzgerald had his first taste of the Lockett phenomenon when he was taken on a tour of the Swans’ facilities shortly after being drafted by the club.

“I heard all this cheering and I looked through the window and there were all these club legends,” Fitzgerald explained.

“They were all standing and clapping and I thought — what’s that for?

“Tony Lockett was holding a cricket bat up (like a player does when reaching a milestone) and the nutritionist was there and he had come back from off-season and got a 100 on his skinfolds.

“So he was raising the bat. He was the only player ever who they would give a clap because he came back so fat.”

“It’s fantastic for our players to have access to Tony during our training sessions” Swans coach John Longmire told the club’s official website.

“He obviously knows a thing or two about goalkicking, and to be able to draw upon that experience and knowledge can only be a good thing for our players.”

Longmire revealed that the club have been eager to entice Lockett — who kicked 1360 goals in 281 games for St Kilda and the Swans — back in to the fold for some time.

It’s 51-year-old Lockett’s first role with a football club, in any capacity, since his retirement in 2002.

The Australian football Hall of Famer won the 1987 Brownlow Medal, is a four- time Coleman medallist and five-time All-Australian.
