Melbourne's Steven May hospitalised following brutal collision

Melbourne Demons star Steven May was transported to hospital after being on the receiving end of a brutal hit from Hawthorn’s Mabior Chol.

The Dees defender attempted to spoil a kick meant for Chol in the dying stages of the second quarter. But as he rushed into the contest, Chol leapt off the ground and flushed his left knee square into the ribcage of May.

The impact instantly crumpled May before Chol came crashing down on top of him as they both hit the turf.

Chol remained in the play as he fed the ball inside Hawthorn’s forward 50 before Luke Breust kicked a goal.

As the play unfolded however May remained down on the turf as Melbourne medical staff rushed to his side.

He was helped from the field before he was subbed out of the contest at halftime before being transported to hospital in the third quarter.

It mattered little in the outcome of the contest as the Demons destroyed their rivals to claim the 14.9 (93) to 5.8 (38) victory.

Melbourne stormed out of the gates at the MCG on Saturday as they kicked the opening five goals of the game.

Despite a spirited fight back from Hawthorn, they weren’t able to capitalise on the scoreboard. An issue the Demons didn’t face as they slammed home four goals in the third quarter to extend their lead.

To make matters worse however for the Dees, fellow star defender Jake Lever spent the majority of the quarter on the bench to leave the backline decimated.

Lever had his right knee taped up after landing awkwardly following a shot on goal from the Hawks.

Despite the losses, the Demons made light work of the Hawks as they stormed away to win by 55-points.

Bayley Fritsch led the charge in front of goal with five majors while Kysaiah Pickett and Kade Chandler combined to kick five.

Through the middle of the ground Christian Petracca was at his unstoppable best as he racked up 29 touches and one goal.

James Sicily was back to his best for the Hawks with 27 touches, but the club was blown off the turf at the MCG to fall to 0-2.
