THE risks of playing AFL footy took a terrifying new twist for St Kilda midfielder Daniel McKenzie during what was supposed to be a routine bike ride.
The Saints’ young players have based themselves at a remote farming property in Ghin Ghin, outside Yea in country Victoria, for their pre-season camp.

The players were on a bike ride through the countryside yesterday when McKenzie came face-to-face with one of the region’s deadly locals.
A video posted on the club’s Twitter account show the 21-year-old riding right over the top of the unidentified snake as it crossed a dirt road. It rears quickly in pain and likely fear — a dangerous combination when McKenzie’s unprotected angles are just centimetres away.
He apparently escaped the encounter unscathed, but we’ll forgive him if he doesn’t sprint to the front of the pack on the next country ride.
