South Fremantle Football Club Nick Campo killed in Perth fatal

A ‘popular’ footballer has died after a horror crash which left six other people in hospital.

An aspiring 18-year-old West Australian AFL footballer has died in a car crash in Perth.

Nick Campo, who was a Colts player for South Fremantle Football Club, was sitting in the rear passenger seat of a vehicle when it crashed and rolled on Farrington Rd in North Lake about 11.40pm on Saturday.

The vehicle then collided into a black Jeep patriot SUV that was travelling in the opposite direction, heading east.

Three other passengers in the vehicle alongside Campo were taken to Royal Perth Hospital by St John WA for treatment of various injuries.

The 17-year-old male driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital.

The 26-year-old male driver and 27-year-old female passenger of the Jeep were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital with minor injuries.

On Sunday, Campo’s father, Daniel Campo, said their family has been “ripped apart” since learning of the horror crash.

“In the early hours of this morning our beautiful son Nick passed away after he was involved in a tragic car accident, our lives have been ripped apart, 18 years old, a future with so much hope taken away, we are praying others in the car involved will be OK,” Mr Campo wrote on Facebook.

South Fremantle CEO Cameron Britt also extended his sympathies to the Campo family, and said the club was in “deep shock” by the tragedy.

“South Fremantle Football Club is deeply saddened by news of a car accident overnight ... resulting in the tragic death of South Fremantle footballer Nick Campo,” he said in a statement.

“We are a club in deep shock, focused upon supporting our players, staff and their families in these tragic circumstances.

“We ask that all involved are given the appropriate space and respect to grieve.”

Railways Football Club Kalgoorlie also shared the news with its supporters on Sunday.

“With the heaviest of hearts the Railways Football Club pays tribute and respect to Nick Campo who passed away in a vehicle accident last night,” the club wrote on social media.

“Nick played early junior football at Railways and was playing Colts with South Fremantle FC.

“Nick was a popular friend to many at Railways.

“A life full of promise taken way too soon with Nick only very recently turning 18.”

Campo had played four matches for the Colts this season, including the club’s loss to Claremont last weekend.

The rising star was one of the best on ground with 26 disposals during his club’s round 13’s win over East Perth.
