SLOW starts and how to fix them was high on Hawthorn's review agenda yesterday.

Midfielder Shaun Burgoyne said it was a fault that had to be rectified before the Hawks played West Coast at the MCG on Friday night.

"There are things we need to address. We started slow again at the weekend against a quality team and we've done that the last couple of weeks," Burgoyne said before the Hawks recovery session at Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre.

"We need to come out and make an impact from the first bounce.

"We gave Geelong a fairly big head start and at the weekend we gave Sydney a head start, as well. Against those quality teams, you're going to lose more than you win if you give away those starts.

"We'll review the game today and hopefully we'll find out the cause of it and fix it this week.

"We've got a list now that's pretty mature. We've got some stable heads at the top and some young guys coming through who can make an impact. So, we've got very good belief within the group that, if we play the way we want to play, we can beat anyone.

"But then again, if we're off 1 per cent or 2 per cent, we'll have a first quarter like we did against Sydney."

Burgoyne said the long trek for visiting teams at the SCG due to grandstand renovations wasn't a factor that doused any emotion built up in the temporary dressing rooms.

"We got to train there the day before the match and walked the route," he said.

"It was a fairly big walk and having spectators close which is something we're not used to, but we didn't want to use that as an excuse. It was just another challenge to look forward to and overcome."

And the former Port Adelaide premiership midfielder now has equal bragging rights with elder brother Peter after slotting the match-sealing goal last Saturday night.

"I've never been in that situation. My brother kicked a goal after the siren against Carlton in about '98. It's a different experience," Burgoyne said.

"I knew what the score was and that there was a little time left. So I just focused on my routine.

"When you've got something like that, you can pretty much drown out the rest. That's what gives me the best opportunity to kick a goal."
