Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey has been banned for three matches after his late and high hit on West Coast’s Elijah Hewett on the weekend.

The ladder-leading Pies claimed a 63-point win but De Goey’s bump overshadowed the result as he was referred directly to the Tribunal for his careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

De Goey will now miss Collingwood’s next matches against Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast and will be scheduled to return in round 17 on July 7 against the Western Bulldogs.

The hit immediately drew the ire of pundits and fans alike when the Collingwood star left his feet and caught Hewett’s head clean in the clash.

The 19-year-old Eagle subsequently exited the game with concussion.

Fans called it a “red card” offence and said there was “no place for that in the game anymore”.

Collingwood pleaded guilty to all aspects of the charge and asked for a three-week ban, while the AFL were chasing four weeks.

The AFL also reportedly took into account De Goey’s remorse, as the Pies veteran apologised for his actions.

“It wasn’t until I looked up at the screen I realised I caught Elijah high,” De Goey said.

“I felt shattered for him personally.”

De Goey asked to speak to Hewett after the match, and when he was turned away due to Hewett not being on the bench, he asked for the youngster’s phone number to apologise.

Hewett was reportedly “appreciative” to receive the message.

“I don’t go out there to play my footy in a dirty way and to see someone get injured like that was obviously disappointing and first and foremost you worried about the person, which was Elijah and then after just making sure he’s OK.”

The Tribunal deliberated and ruled the sanction should be “three-plus matches”.

The reasons for the sanction came after taking the force of the bump, Hewett’s concussion, the lateness of the hit and that it was a “split-second late”, that De Goey’s remorse was “genuine” and had “accepted that the impact was severe”.

However, it was deemed the concussion was “avoidable”.
