Melbourne captain Nathan Jones still riled by Blues’ comments from three years ago

MELBOURNE co-captain Nathan Jones says the bruise-free footy barbs directed at the Demons three years ago by two Carlton players are still fresh in his mind.

As the Demons prepare to take on fellow winless team Carlton on Saturday, Jones admitted the comments from Mitch Robinson and Dennis Armfield in 2011 still stung.

“I still remember it, I’m not sure about the rest of the group,” Jones said today.

“That’s definitely at the forefront of my mind going into the game.

“But I think I’m more worried about trying to win and prepare as best I can and help prepare the team as best as they can and I’m looking forward to taking them on.

“I think it’s done and dusted, but there’s no doubt (they’re) still in there (in my mind).”

Blues captain Marc Murphy promised fans would see a “pretty aggressive side’’ this week.

AFL concedes Melbourne could receive priority pick, and ultimately first three draft selections

MELBOURNE could achieve the unthinkable and claim the first three picks in this year’s national draft.

The AFL has conceded it’s possible the Demons could receive a “special assistance” priority pick from the AFL Commission and if it happened, the embattled Demons would strongly argue for it to be used before Pick 1.

If the Demons finished last on the ladder — they are favourites for the wooden spoon — they would receive pick No. 1 as per normal circumstance.

The third card to fall would depend on out-of-contract defender James Frawley.

If Frawley leaves the club via free agency, the Demons would be compensated with a draft selection, which would be allocated as the pick immediately after the club’s first pick.

It’s unlikely all three scenarios will fall Melbourne’s way, but if they did Melbourne effectively would have picks No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 in the November draft.

Cloke in mind games battle but happy with form despite dry start

COLLINGWOOD forward Travis Cloke admits half his football battles continue to be fought inside his head, as he prepares for his 200th game against Richmond on Friday night.

The MCG blockbuster looms as an early-season flashpoint for both sides as they desperately seek to avoid a 1-3 start to the season.

Cloke has had just three scoring shots in three games, with his total scoreboard contribution of 2.1 all coming in the Round 2 win over Sydney.

Cloke, 27, was adamant he was happy with his own form throughout the first three rounds but said he was still vulnerable to lapses in confidence, even in the prime years of his career.

“Half the time the battle is within my head,” Cloke said.

“It’s a matter of wining that and half the time that’s the challenge of mine.

“If you drop a mark early on obviously your confidence goes down. You want to take one, you want to kick goals, you want to do perfect things.

“You are not human if you don’t get upset with these kinds of things. Half the time you’ve got to keep yourself going, push yourself forward, next contest, next game of footy.”

Richmond legend Kevin Bartlett blasts AFL Commission, accusing it of knowing “stuff all” about game

AFL great Kevin Bartlett has launched a savage attack on the AFL Commission, accusing it of knowing “stuff all” about the game.

Pushing yet again for a reduction in interchange rotations, Bartlett warned that soccer “will kill’’ Australian Rules within 20 years unless the commission acted to rid the game of rolling mauls and the chip-chip, kicking backwards, possession style of football.

Bartlett said he wrote to the AFL Commission last year as part of the charter to determine what Australian Rules was as a sport, and what aspects of the sport should be protected, but says his letter was not acknowledged, nor does he know if it was read by anyone at the AFL.

“I don’t have any faith in the AFL Commission, I don’t think they have any idea about the game,’’ Bartlett said.

“They might be captains of industry, they might know how to run Woolworths or a Bunnings, tell you about finances and what to buy on the stock exchange, but I reckon they know stuff all about footy.”
