HAWTHORN ball magnet Sam Mitchell has withdrawn from tomorrow's clash against the Gold Coast at the MCG.

The midfielder, who has not missed a game this season, is believed to be carrying some soreness.

He has been replaced by Shane Savage while Chance Bateman has been added to the emergencies.

Mitchell is equal fifth favourite ($12) for the Brownlow Medal and averages 28 touches a game.

The Hawks have employed an injury management plan, omitting big men Jarryd Roughead (ankle) against Port Adelaide last weekend and David Hale against Essendon in Round 18.

Hawthorn will be without Cyril Rioli (shoulder) and Josh Gibson (ankle) but will welcome back spearhead Lance
Franklin (hamstring).

The Hawks need a win to help shore up a top-four berth, before tough assignments against Sydney (SCG) and West Coast (MCG).
