Sacked AFL reporter Tom Morris approached for SEN media gig

A former AFL reporter could soon make a return to the media, a year after he was sacked for making offensive comments about a colleague.

Former Fox Footy reporter Tom Morris’ media exile could soon be over after he was approached by SEN about a role in 2023.

Morris was sacked last March after audio of him making offensive comments about then Fox Sports colleague Megan Barnard were leaked to social media.

SEN, the sports radio network and sports news website, is believed to be the first media outlet to offer him another gig, with several potential roles in play for the upcoming AFL season.

The Herald Sun reports veteran broadcaster and former Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy, who now co-hosts Sportsday on SEN with Port Adelaide 300-gamer Kane Cornes, would be happy to work with Morris again.

Morris and Healy worked together on the show when it was on 3AW and on Fox Footy’s On The Couch, where Morris appeared as a breaking news reporter.

Another potential hosting option could see Morris reunite with friend and former Fox Footy colleague Sarah Olle on a Sunday show.

SEN, owned by Craig Hutchison, is also reportedly keen to hire Morris because of his experience covering cricket.

The radio station is one of the major commercial radio rights holders for Cricket Australia.

Morris, 31, has completed several education programs concerning sexism, racism and other social issues over the past year.

His sacking in the opening week of last year’s AFL season was one of the biggest scandals of the year.

Morris copped an extraordinary personal attack from Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge in a post-game press conference after the season opener over a team selection story Morris reported.

Beveridge apologised the following day, but the exchange was overshadowed by the leaking of the offensive Morris audio.

A second slip featuring homophobic and racist slurs also emerged before Morris was eventually sacked Fox Footy last March.

Morris apologised for his comments, which he described as “disgusting and disgraceful”.

“I would like to unconditionally apologise to everyone for my disgusting and disgraceful comments, which became public yesterday,” he posted on Twitter.

“I am especially sorry to the person involved. No one should ever in any place, or at any time, be spoken about in that way.

“I am deeply ashamed of my behaviour. My comments were hurtful to many and I will now take the time to listen, learn and work to improve myself, ensuring I become a better person. I am truly sorry to everyone.”
