FORMER Melbourne captain Jack Trengove could be headed to Richmond in exchange for the Tigers’ first-round draft pick.

The Herald Sun yesterday revealed the Demons were considering swapping Trengove and their No. 23 pick for Richmond’s No. 12 selection.

LONERGAN NO DOG: LATEST TRADE MOVES AT EVERY CLUB

The man taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2009 national draft was believed to be initially reluctant to leave the Demons but would not block the deal.

It is understood the midfielder has already undergone a medical test at Richmond and toured the club’s Punt Rd facilities.

Richmond, which has flagged its desire to bolster its midfield division, approached Melbourne about the exchange.

Sources yesterday said a fresh start could help rejuvenate Trengove, 23, after five chequered years and 81 games at the Demons.

Adelaide is also believed to be interested in the South Australian, who enjoyed an excellent first season at Melbourne but has since failed to recapture top form.

He was made the AFL’s youngest captain under former coach Mark Neeld but stepped down last year because of form and serious foot injuries.

Trengove is recovering from a broken navicular bone that restricted him to two games last season. He is still unable to train fully.

The Dee’s training program would be scaled back before Christmas after the latest surgery on his foot in April.

The swap would strengthen Melbourne’s trade and draft position considerably.

The Dees already boast picks No. 2 and No. 3 and could now have pick No. 12 to help recruit a star midfielder from a rival club, before the trade period deadline at 5pm next Thursday.

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney yesterday said the Demons would look at all trade options, including off-loading its former skipper.

“We said after our last game to our playing list that we would look at all avenues to improve our list,” Mahoney said.

“Richmond came to us with a potential deal, Jack is aware of this and all parties will now take some time to consider our options.”
